CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION

Religious traditions frequently discuss the concept of stewardship. Beth uses the word steward frequently in political conversations. She sees the role of public officials as being good stewards of taxpayer dollars, the rule of law, and public trust. Steward connotes serving others with a sense of care and responsibility.

How beautiful to think of ourselves as stewards of God’s grace! It is an awesome responsibility to recognize that we are here to care for one another, to embody forgiveness, to uphold one another’s dignity. Our political conversations, thoughts, and actions are not exempt from this responsibility, and this moment calls out for us to extend grace to one another.

1.In what relationships in your own life do you recognize a grace deficit? Are there family members or friends whom you have difficulty offering grace to in political discussions?

2.What political figure triggers anger and frustration in you? What would happen if you offered this person grace—even on a small issue or controversy? How does it feel in that moment to let go and offer grace to that person?

3.How can you offer grace to yourself? Is there an area of policy that intimidates you? How could you explore that area without passing judgment on yourself or your ideas? Can you think of a time you were wrong about a political issue or controversy? Can you give yourself the grace to be wrong sometimes and still feel deserving of a role in the bigger discourse?
